Cooperation is Important in Decorating Your Home

August 30th, 2009

home decorating, decision making, decorating decisions, family cooperation, familyDoes it really matter if your next-door neighbor doesn’t like the way you’ve arranged your kitchen? Well, no offense, but not really. Sure you might want a second opinion, and that’s great. But when you’re decorating, make sure you include all the right people in the decision making.

Got a roommate? Make sure they can live with the decorating decisions you’re making. You don’t have to agree with one another on every single detail. In fact, that probably would be impossible. But as you begin to decorate, or better yet, before you move in together, sit down and discuss the types of living environment you both like.

If your styles are extremely different with little common ground, it may be a tough road. But keep trying until you reach a compromise. In cases of completely opposite tastes, perhaps each of you can decorate certain areas as you wish, and you may both agree to live with that.

Getting Started with Home Decorating?

August 16th, 2009

If you are feeling a little worried about what lies of head of you, that’s understandable. But don’t ignore it if the anxiety is strong. Decorating should be a fun, exciting adventure, not a painful event. If you’re feeling very tense about the whole thing, take a step back and try to determine why.

Is the budget you’re working with too high? Are you in the middle of life changes that make it hard for you to focus on this task? Are you unhappy with your roommate and therefore find it difficult to work on the living spaces you share? If you have such problems, put off major decorating for a while. Working on your home might seem like a good diversion to help you forget about an unhappy condition, but the issues that are really bothering you will have to be worked out sooner or later.

When you’re ready to begin decorating your home, you will probably start noticing things like interesting groupings in friends’ homes, or perhaps you’ll impulsively pick up a decorating magazine (or two, or three) in the grocery store. When the time is right, you’ll know, and you’ll do a much better job if the stress has been worked through.

In your home, you probably have two types of spaces to decorate: your “predetermined spaces” and your “free spaces”. Your predetermined spaces (or entire rooms, in some cases) are those that you know you need, you know exactly how you’ll use them, and you know what type of furnishings you need for them. In your bedroom, for instance, you know you’ll need a bed and something that stores clothing, such as a dresser. In your living room, you’ll need some sort of seating, such as a sofa.

Free spaces don’t fall neatly into place as predetermined spaces do. In fact, some free spaces come about almost by accident. Let’s say you’ve just moved into an apartment, you’ve set up all your furnishings, and you realize you have a little more space than you thought or that you could shift your belongings a bit and end up with open areas that could be put to use. These areas can also be as compact as a corner of a room or even an unused closet or as large as an entire room.
